Rags make paper. In this workshop students will learn the practice and production of handmade paper from clothing rags, specifically military uniforms. Using uniforms as a fiber source students will deconstruct and beat them into a pulp in order to render them into paper, pulling the pulp into sheets one at a time by hand. Students will learn the basics of rag papermaking with tools and techniques in order to produce numerous sheets of high quality paper. They will also explore a contemporary application in hand papermaking called pulp printing, which uses finely-beaten, pigmented pulp sprayed through a stencil, creating detailed, layered imagery onto wet sheets of paper.
