Combat papermakers will attend an opening of an exhibit in the President's Gallery at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA. The exhibit showcases the work of the Combat Paper Project as well as work created by students of the HOPE Foundation Project. Combat papermakers worked with the Foundation in the summer of 2009. The exhibit runs through March 10th.

Drew Cameron will participate in a panel discussion, "Symposium on Art and War: Looking at Global Conflict through the Creative Lens", at the School of Visual and Performing Arts. 7:00 pm on Thursday in Rose Performance Hall. He will also meet with Fine Arts classes on the 12th. The panel discussion is open to the public.

Drew Matott will join up with art therapist Gretchen Miller to offer a one-grad credit course merging papermaking and art therapy. A free evening lecture and reading of selected Combat Paper work open to the community is planned for the 25th.

University of Iowa
Iowa City, IA
The University of Iowa Center for the Book will host the Combat Paper Project for a series of workshops and public demonstrations and lectures. Events will include a writing workshop for veterans, western papermaking and pulp printing workshops, and Japanese papermaking techniques with Tim Barrett. Veterans workshops are scheduled for April 7 - 10, with an artist residency to follow. A public lecture is planned for the 15th.

Combat papermakers will conduct a series of lectures, readings, interactive performances and exhibition at the Newark Public Library gallery, along with a veterans' workshop (April 19 - 21). A public lecture and performance is planned to coincide with an exhibit of Combat Paper artwork. The exhibit runs April 1 - June 26.

Violence Transformed Conference

As guests of the Violence Transformed Conference, Combat papermakers will provide an evening presentation at the Gutman Library of Harvard University in conjunction with an exhibit (April 24 - May 7) with Jonathan Shay (author of Achilles in Vietnam) on April 27th (5:30-8:00), and participate in an interactive presentation at the "old" State House on April 29th.

The University of Alabama and the graduate school of Book Arts with Steve Miller will host a two-week Combat Paper residency. Events will include papermaking workshops, meeting with student classes and public presentations. An exhibit of Combat Paper artwork will be on exhibit for the entire semester.

Drew Matott, Drew Cameron and members of the Combat Paper Project will be visiting the Conch Republic as they gather for a two-week planning workshop and artist residency at TSKW. Papermaking workshops are planned for the 18th and 21st with an exhibit opening on the evening of the 17th.

Drew Matott, Drew Cameron and members of the Combat Paper Project will participate in a two week artist residency and veterans workshop at the Southwest School of Art & Craft. Veteran papermaking, writing and book binding workshops, with an exhibition and artist talks during the week of November 18 - 21.

Drew Matott will team up with Gretchen Miller to lead a workshop for the Student Association for Art Therapy. demonstrate the art of papermaking and how the processes might be incorporated into an art therapy. The processes of papermaking, pulp printing and book binding as art therapy strategies will be discussed. The workshop will include a lecture and seminar discussion of the processes and Combat Paper workshop dynamics.

Drew Matott, John LaFalce and Scott Meeker will present a lecture about recent Combat Paper Project activities, to include the United Kingdom tour and recent papermaking workshops in Cleveland and Savannah. They will also host a street performance workshop utilizing a pedal-powered beater at the Dard Hunter annual conference for hand papermakers.

Madison, WI
Honoring the Warrior: Combat Paper on the Black Hawk Trail Robert Possehl and the Combat Paper Project will conduct a series of paper projects with local veterans and students. Events will include papermaking workshops (Wednesday-Friday; 10-4 at Art Lofts Paper Mill, 111 North Frances St.) and a public presentation on Saturday, 4-7 pm at Escape Java Joint Art Gallery (940 Williamson St.).

Combat Paper Project workshop and residency at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Round table discussions, performances, exhibitions, papermaking and bookbinding workshops are planned. There will also be a writing workshop held in conjunction with the Warrior Writers Project. Susannah Schouweiler has written an article on MinnPost.com announcing the week-long visit to Minneapolis.

Combat Paper Project artists will conduct a series of paper and printmaking workshops in conjunction with the Hope Youth Foundation of Jamaica Plain. Papermakers will also be working with a group of local veterans.

Combat papermakers will bring the studio to the gallery to highlight the artistic and transformational process of papermaking. The Firehouse Gallery will be transformed into a working paper and book studio during the eight week exhibit of the Combat Paper Project. Artists will be beating pulp, pulling paper sheets and working their craft while viewers peruse the hanging art work. The public is invited to engage the artists as they work. Saturday afternoon papermaking workshops will be offered. Opening reception: 5 - 8 pm, Friday, February 20th. (Seven Days ran an article on the show in their March 4th issue and Vermont Art Zine ran a thoughtful review on their blogspot.)
